Megan of Avant-Garde Comfort//Fashion Novel Alert: Beneath a Starlet Sky Review

Let’s face it: not all fashionistas love to read. Hell, I’m a writer and I don’t even love to read. But after hearing about Beneath A Starlet Sky, penned by two Hollywood women who also wrote NY Times best-seller Celebutantes, I was intrigued. I don’t love to read, but a novel about fashion and celebrity scandal? I can spare some time for that.

One of the most attractive things about this novel is certainly the main character’s contagious ambition and drive to succeed no matter what mishaps come flying her way. I read Beneath a Starlet Sky in its entirety in just two days and finished feeling ready to conquer the world. Perhaps it was the authenticity of the story that made it feel so relatable. The two authors of the novel are spawns of Hollywood royalty themselves—one the daughter of famed film and TV producer Leonard Goldberg, the other, daughter of Dennis Hopper. They have been to Cannes, been on set, and have mingled with the stars, all beginning from a young age. With that kind of credibility, experience, and obvious genetic talent, these two women are sure to write a good story.

Beneath a Starlet Sky gives an inside look at the insane world of the fashion and entertainment industry. The heroine of the novel is Lola Santisi, a daughter of Hollyweird royalty, whose life goal is to get out of her parents’ shadow. This might prove to be hard, especially considering her ex-model mother’s new reality show shoving cameras in everyone’s face at any given moment, and the fact that her father and brother are competing directors at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The hardworking alpha-female is a struggling CEO of a budding fashion label for her designer “BGF (best gay forever),” but don’t let the title fool you—Lola and Julian are the only two employees of Julian Tennant Inc.—and if that isn’t enough, the senior editor of a major magazine is out to get her. Mix in her recent cure of “actorholism” thanks to her doctor boyfriend, and what’s not to love?

Though the majority of the plot takes place in Cannes, France during “the most prestigious film festival in the world,” the reader sees a fair share of Lola’s bicoastal life. While her career in fashion is mainly in New York City, her personal life remains in Los Angeles where her family, boyfriend, and BFFs live. The near-300-page novel chronicles the ups and downs of Lola’s career, love life, family, and friendships. Can she really have it all? Or is this balancing act about to come crashing down?
