Sherlock Holmes is back.

The rough around the edges London based detective and his dear assistant Dr Watson is back in this action packed movie from director Guy Ritchie (famous for Sherlock Holmes 2009, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels 1998).

Sherlock Holmes is a famous literary character created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and has become an English classic over time. I remember watching the older Sherlock Holmes movies around the Christmas period with my family as a child.

Holmes is renowned for his fighting styles, fabulous disguises and his ability to calculate cases that’d make a policeman of his day whimper. These new takes on the Sherlock Holmes character really embody these character traits without turning it into an American police procedural such as the likes of CSI. Considering the period that the films are set in Holmes uses a lot of modern techniques such as what we now call forensic science and character psychology. The devil in the details, Holmes calls it his craft, and speaks of it as an old friend.

The literary phenomenon has undergone a bit of a media revival in the past few years. In 2009 the first of the new Sherlock Holmes films was released. It stared Robert Dawney, Jr. (Sherlock Holmes 2009, Due Date 2010) as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus 2009, A.I Artificial Intelligence 2001) as Dr Watson.

The film’s marketing team wanted to represent that they too were after the Christmas audience tagging it as “Holmes for the holiday” hoping to reach out for the old Holmes lovers. Robert Dawney, Jr. Focused on a psychologically intense, martially active, calculative, ruffled up, socially awkward, sarcastic and cynical character and won a Golden Globe for his efforts.

Holmes returned in this 2011 sequel A Game of Shadows. The plot is thick with international politics and danger making it the biggest adventure yet for this new Holmes. It sees the marriage of Dr Watson with Mary Watson. A new female character takes centre stage from Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams)with the fortune telling Madam Simza Heron(Noomi Rapace).

With another well woven web of mystery, trickery, deceit, and action packed adventure I doubt this is the last we’ll see of our beloved Sherlock Holmes.

I think the blue velvet hat which is seen through out the film is very inspirational for style. Brass buttons are also a nice detail to take away from the film... I am planning on retooling a jacket and may use brassy buttons for this vintage feel...
